My Experience Volunteering!

On Friday May 18th, 2012, I volunteered for 4 hours at my youngest sister Peyton’s school Goodwin Elementary School in North Aurora, Illinois. I volunteered here during their field day, which is a day at the end of school year where the kids have a fun day and play a variety of games. While volunteering here I was able to see how teaching and working in a school period related to FCS 4840 as well as other FCS classes offered to those concentrating in family services. One way that I was able to relate it to FCS 4840 was when I went on lunch with my sister’s class there were kids that didn’t have a lunch or even a snack. It made me see that as a teacher how important it is to pay attention to your students, even when it is time for lunch because many families are struggling and may not be able to provide their child with a lunch. I was also able to relate my time to other FCS classes when observing the children’s behaviors. It reminded me that many children act as a reflection of what is going on at home. If other people in the community volunteered here I think that it would make the community see how important it is to have free activities and games for the children. By doing this it gives kids something to look forward, and puts them in a positive mood. I found volunteering a fun experience, because I love kids, and seeing a smile on their face made it worth my time helping out. In the end, I feel that volunteering is something that everyone should do in order to give back to his or her community and to humble themself.
